An important day for all water-soluble organisms!

I did not do anything even slightly useful today, but I was mostly conscious, just not energetic.

Watched: Helluva Boss 2.9: That was a pretty terrible day for Blitz, but he both deserved it and asked for it. It was also a terrible day for Stolas, who really didn’t.

Read: The Splendid Work of a Monster Maid vol 4-5 (Yugata Tanabe): I thought the undercover maid jobs would go on forever, but no, the story is actually complete in five volumes, everything wrapped up!

Written: Covid.

Really a pretty swell invention, even though I haven’t used one in ages.

Watched: Helluva Boss 2.7½: The Sally Mae-visits-Millie special. A bit of the old ultra-violence.

Watched: Helluva Boss 2.8: Marith is right, the fic writers already watched this episode 377 times in simulation and knew how it was going to go, but that didn’t make it less painful. And Blitz was almost a functional adult for some parts of the episode! (Loona, as usual, was secretly MVP.)

Watched: The Ancient Magus’ Bride 2.17-18: All the pieces of the doom are converging!

Also National Teddy Bear Day and Wonderful Weirdoes Day.

Since I didn’t have to do anything except wait for phone calls all morning, that’s all I did. This activity combines well with sleeping. Eventually I got to hand it over to Coworker L and go grocery shopping, which was moderately successful. So, I kind of did two things today, counting morning and evening on-call as half a thing each.

I also thought about game design a whole lot, but in a despairing kind of way because so many of these ideas are not fitting together. Six rolls is definitely too many to resolve the most simple attack, though.

Watched: Helluva Boss 2.5-6: I guess it was nice to see Blitz’s sister, but the new writer is just bad. Even in this genre, the characters deserve more respect than that. Ep 6 was way better, and opens up plot, and also I actually like Fizzaroli and Ozzie. (Although Ozzie and Stolas should have been more useful.)

Read: “The Curing” (Kristina Ten): Magical realism plus middle-school clique fads equals a dismaying mess and permanent damage.

Read: “The Three O’Clock Dragon” (John Wiswell): More magical realism, train dragon vs corrupt mayor. I think this may be a reflection on current NYC politics, but not sure.

Read: “The Job at the End of the World” (Ray Nayler): Not fantasy, barely even SF despite being set in our climate-disaster future in which all the works of humanity are as nothing before the fire tornadoes.

Had to get up early for another meeting, although at least this one isn’t repeating. It also wasn’t that useful, possibly because I reject the very notion of being a leader.

Watched: Helluva Boss 2.2, 1.0-5: Ugh, the new episode, although probably beloved of Loovia fans, is not at all good. Did the new writer even watch the preceding episodes? I had to go back and rewatch some to remember just how sordid and bizarre and hyper it’s supposed to be.

Read: Komi Can’t Communicate vol 21 (Tomohito Oda): Komi abroad! A little more of Komi and Rumiko’s friendship, but not one of the more exciting volumes.

Written: 636 kitten words, somehow.

After waking up early and going “fuck this”, I decided to go into the office after the early meeting instead of before, and then found out that boss A’s kid is sick (probably not covid, but still yucky) and the going-into-the-office plan fell apart. There was some movement towards everybody going in tomorrow, but people were too wishy-washy about whether it was really happening, so I’m using my own discretion and if they don’t like it, they can make an actual plan next time. I’ve been interacting with people over the Internet for more than 30 years, I feel no need to marinate in the virus pits just so I can say I was in the same room as my coworkers.

Watched: Helluva Boss 1.6-7a, 2.1: Another episode of violence in which Millie and Loona save the day because they are awesome, and then all feelings all the time. Apparently the second part of the S1 finale is not out yet, but based on the first episode of S2 (which is), it’s probably Blitz feeling terrible about his poor life choices.

Watched: Our Flag Means Death 4: I had not previously understood how over the top Stede’s ship is. Also, cliffhanger ending!

Written: 595 kitten words.

Apparently while I was looking for pictures that I could use for my terrible D&D character, Dave was optimizing his character to provide all needed skills for the party. I should probably just give up on gaming, shouldn’t I?

Watched: Helluva Boss 0-5: Dysfunctional demon startup doing murders on Earth when they can stop swearing at each other and being horny but it’s actually about the relationships and I see why Marith is a Stolitz shipper and Stolas and Octavia are so adorable in episode 2 and I kind of like Loona even though she’s awful and askjgfagk FIXME

Watched: Our Flag Means Death 3: Still ridiculous and violent, because what else do you expect from the Republic of Pirates? But finally we meet Blackbeard! Despite Izzy’s valiant efforts.

Written: Nothing, I tried to go to bed early so I can go in to the office tomorrow.
